2003 Château de la Dauphine (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Fronsac)

Doubled decanted. Profound colour,mature but dark at the same time. Predominant Merlot nose full of ripe plums with a touch of CF (white pepper). Some raw meat too. Very Fronsac. On the palate less exciting with an unbalanced acidity, tannins and alcohol. Nice but strange bitterness when finish but coming from sediments. I can not resit to mention...where is the bloody yet famous 2003 heat? Surely inside of some full pockets hottie critics. I have been drinking this wine (1998 and 2000 vintages) for years and this bottle is the worst indeed. By the way, 2003 was an extraordinary year, wasn´t it? So weird is all.

Color profundo, maduro pero al mismo tiempo oscuro. Nariz predominantemente Merlot de ciruelas pasadas con un toque a pimienta blanca del CF. Algo de carne cruda también. Muy Fronsac. En boca menos excitante con unos taninos, acidez y alcohol desequilibrados. Rica pero extraño amargor al finalizar pero viene de los sedimentos. No puedo resistirme a comentar ... ¿dónde está el maldito e incluso famoso calor del 2003? Seguramente dentro de los bolsillos llenos de algunos críticos de moda. He estado bebiendo este vino durante años (añadas 1998 y 2000) y esta botella es desde luego la peor. A propósito, el 2003 fue un año extraordinario, ¿verdad?. Todo es tan raro

Imperial Gran Reserva 2001

• 2001 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Imperial Gran Reserva - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
  Fermented in oak. Young colour, profound violet with cardinal edges. Super perfumed. Fruit everywhere: wild strawberries (Tempranillo) soaked in cinnamon. Totally Graciano for my nose: gunpowder. Long legs. This is going to be a long distance runner but quite delicious at this moment. Palate is closed, sturdy and tannic. High acidity. Clearly needs some time. It is not at store yet. Have to wait until next year.
  
  Fermentado en barril. Color joven, violeta profundo con ribetes cardenalicios. Super perfumado. Fruta por todas partes: fresas salvajes (Tempranillo) ahogadas en canela. Totalmente en Graciano para mi nariz: pólvora. Largas lágrimas. Tiene una larga vida por delante pero está delicioso ahora. El palacar está cerrado, robusto y tánico. Alta acidez. Claramente necesita tiempo. No está a la venta aú. Tenemos que esperar hasta el año que viene.

Imperial Gran Reserva 1999

  Fermented in steel. Same dark colour. Huge aromatic, very Graciano again. Nose reduced, leather and plum mermelade. Animal farm. Seems to be a traditional Imperial. Softier than 2001. Totally ready to be drunk. Medium body but balanced on the palate. It has not a very long finish. People´s choice.
  
  Fermentado en acero. Mismo color oscuro. Fuertemente aromático, de nuevo muy Graciano. Nariz reducida, cuero y mermelada de ciruelas. Granja. Es un Imperial tradicional. Más suave que el 2001. Totalmente preparado para ser bebido. Cuerpo medio pero equilibrado en boca. No tiene un largo final. EL favorito de la gente.

Imperial Gran Reserva 1996

  Fermented in steel. PN colour for orange rims. Almost transparent. Frank nose. Kitchen cupboard, mainly clove. Toffee. Pastryshop. Creamy mouthfeel. Remarkable acidity. To be smelt for hours. My outsider.
  
  Fermentado en acero. Color PN para ribetes naranjas. Casi transparente. Nariz franca. Armario de cocina, principalmente clavo. Caramelo de café con leche. Pastelería. Sensación cremosa en boca. Para ser olido durante horas. Mi inesperado.

Imperial Gran Reserva 1988

  Fermented in concreted. Bordeaux-like colour (brilliant brick). The sort of wine nose I adore. Toffee, cinnamon, vanilla, clove, surprisingly artichokes and pencil lead on the nose . Perfect wax aroma. Honey. Profund and complex nose. Gliceric, creamy, milky mouthfeel. Refreshing palate with a balanced acidity. 1988 was just a fair harvest for Rioja but a very good one for Cune. My WOTN.
  
  Fermentado en hormigón. Color Burdeos (ladrillo brillante). La clase de nariz que adoro. En nariz toffee, canela, vainilla, clavo, sorprendentemente alcachofas y mina de lápiz. Perfecto aroma a cera.Miel. Narz profunda y compleja. Sensación en boca glicérica, cremosa, láctica. Refrescante paladar con una acidez equilibrada. 1988 fue solo una cosecha regular para Rioja pero muy buena para Cune. Mi favorito.

Imperial Gran Reserva 1976

  Fermented in concrete. Darker brick colour than 1988. Pretty closed at first but again with a characteristic nose, including black liquorice, anise, paprika, maybe more floral and cinnamon all the way and still coffee bean. Sweet touched on the palate but that damned acidity, too much acid without any fruit. Lacking class.
  
  Fermentado en hormigón. Color ladrillo más oscuro que el 1988. Bastante cerrado al principio pero de nuevo con esa nariz característica incluyendo regaliz negro, anís, pimentón, quizás más floral, canela todo el rato y todavía grano de café. Sueve toque en boca pero esa maldita acidez, demasiada sin ninguna fruta. Carece de clase.

Imperial Gran Reserva 1970

  From magnum. Cognac-like colour. Reduced, closed, funk nose. Henshouse. After some time mint, smoke, pastryshop. Watery texture. Quite acidic aftertaste. Short finish. As always, my respect for the elders but this is not my kind of.
  
  De un magnum. Color coñac. Nariz reducida, cerrada, olorosa. Gallinero. Después de un tiempo menta, ahumados, pastelería. Textura acuosa. Postgusto bastante ácida. Final corto. Como siempre, mi respeto para los viejos pero este no es de mi estilo.

  Class in the glass. PN colour with orange edges. Earthy. Rose petals, rubber and dry cherries on the nose. Lovely long legs. Quite good acidity and suave bitterness when finish.
  
  Qué clase en el vaso. Color PN con bordes naranjas. Terroso. Pétalos de rosa, goma y guindas secas en nariz. Bellas largas lágrimas. Buena acidez y suave amargor al terminar.

  Needs some air. More intense nose. Dark as a raven. Herby. Violets. Quite animal nose at first. Soupy. Pure cream. Calid and oaky palate. Concentrated, still young. Very long.

  Dark as the nite. Perfumed. Earthy. Wet tobacco. Cremier. Good acidity for that calid aftertaste. Long, very long. Different but nice. Reduced so needing air. Some heat for your stomach.
  
  Oscuro como la noche. Perfumado. Terroso. Tabaco mojado. Más cremoso. Buena acidez para un postgusto cálido. Largo, muy largo. Diferente pero rico. Reducido asi que necesita aire. Algo de calor para tu estómago.

  English tobacco, I mean sweet and suave. Biscuits and coke on the nose with roses and violets. Very moscatel when finish (sweetie but softtie at the same time).
  
  Tabaco inglés, quiero decir suave y dulce. Nariz a galleta y cola con rosas y violetas. Muy Moscatel al finalizar (dulce pero suave al mismo tiempo).

Quintarelli has finer wine than Dal Formo, who has cremier ones.

Not bad for an ordinary, artificial even, PC. Better than, for example last Amontillado AB at the same range. If you "create" a PC this is a good way: caramel colour, balanced, creamy and fully aromatic. I have to insist: for what it is, close to your everyday PC (does it exist?)

No mal para un PC ordinario, incluso artificial. Mejor que, por ejemplo ese último Amontillado AB al mismo nivel. Si "creas" un PC este es el modo: color caramelo, equilibrado, cremoso y plenamente aromático. Tengo que insistir: para lo que es, cerca de un PC para todos los días, si es que eso existe.

2006 César Príncipe Cigales

Dark violet colour. On the nose a lovely liquorice and mineral aroma is followed by a secundary of black berries. Superb. Tamed tanins on the palate giving long seconds of pure pleasure. Delightful. Now is ready to go. The perfect mate for an abanda rice.

Color violeta oscuro. En nariz un rico aroma minral a regaliz es seguido poruno secundario de bayas negras. Super. En paladar, taninos domados dando largos segundos de puro placer. Delicioso. Ahora está listo. El perfecto compañero para un arroz abanda.

2000 Maison Leroy Savigny-lès-Beaune

This is why I love this region so much, because bottle like this one. Cherry colour. Clear almost transparent. Marvellous nose. Chimney. Meaty. Golden apples. Mineral palate, with an acidic and bitter aftertaste. Delicious. Does not matter that white capsula around the neck, Leroy is superb.

Por esto me gusta tanto esta región, por botellas como esta. Color cereza. Limpio casi transparente. Nariz maravillosa. Achimeneado. Cárnico. Manzanas doradas. Boca mineral con un postgusto ácido y amargo. Delicioso. No importa esa cápsula blanca alrededor del cuello, Leroy es demasié.

Remembering Joselito

I have been watching on tv a special progam of the 16th aniversary of 2 of May 1996 corrida. Proud to say I was there, looking Joselito´s art, tragic art under the rain.
For those loving this old fight, this kind of ephemeral sculpture, this was a sort of magic, this class in the circus.
The most amazing thing was the human side, a man whom disliked that fame, those highlights on the newspapers, those glory moments even.
The evening when José Miguel Arroyo, Joselito, was the real King, the master of masters. A man of my generation. A genius. An artist.

It is not necessary to be a purist with the past. Just to enjoy those good times.

FInlandia y Estonia 2010

Having some holidays before to start my current new job, I decided to visit a friend in Helsinki. She has not free time so planned St.Petersburg by air and Tallin by boat.
In spite of that, Ruskies had another opinion of what is a Visa and how to obtain it so the imperial place was cancelled.
Living 15 Celsius under is a real experience, mainly for an Spanish like me.

My trip to Estonia was funny (duty free shopping, Tallin gals, Indian restaurant, bikers bar and what about that "highway"? A few days after my visit, the Baltic sea was closed for traffic, so I was lucky.

 

Returning to Helsinki same good rutine (Café Ekberg for example) and little emotions

I have been and good enough for me. Quite difficult to se me over there again.

Summer 2010 / Verano 2010

Getting older? Rutine is ruling your live? What about to ride 2.500 kms in just two weeks?  On a Harley, perspective is chancing at everysingle mile.

Santander was just an excuse to take the road. Madrid -Torrelavega - Santander,  a nice journey, try my seat honey, with nice surprises ( that Louis Boillot et Fils Bourgogne bottle or that relaxing day at El Camello beach.)

From Santander to Haro and then Logroño: So good dawn wine! Sleeping at Agustinos and visiting la Herradura and some of my favorite winemakers (Muga, López Heredia, Rioja Alta) for tastings. Haro is my sort of heaven.

Logroño is another kind of concept, more urban but within charm enough to spend a couple of nites over there, Murrieta and Franco-Españolas the perfect excuse. 

Before the northern style of life take you, it s time to take a little tryp to...Andorra! in order to change my rear tyre and, what about a nice 2002 Alexe-Corton bottle matching an Idiazabal cheese? Just a quick stop before to ride to Benicassim 

Enjoying a couple of nites at the beach, coming to Harley for an easy repair (thank you guys) before to ride to Denia, looking for Ibiza nights.

No time for pics there. I was too busy!!! Day & Nite!!! Specially nite time at Amnesia....soooo good.
Two weeks riding without leaving my country....that has consecuencies!

The Magnificent Seven / Los Siete Magníficos

I adore age-dated Rioja, so have my own Magnificent Seven, in no particular order: Muga, Murrieta, Riscal, Lopez Heredia, Remirez de Ganuza, Rioja Alta and Franco Españolas. Spend a few; Be patient; Lay them down for decades; Get an inmense reward.

Me encanta el Rioja muy viejo, así tengo mis propios Siete Magníficos, sin ningún orden particular. Muga, Murrieta, Riscal, López heredia, Remírezde ganuza, Rioja Alta y Franco-Españolas. Gasta un poco, se paciente, túmbalas por décadas y obtén una recompensa inmensa.

1998 Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Champ Gain

I had bought this bottle fearfully, the curious incident of the oxidized Burgundy, you know. “Perhaps it would be wise to avoid the vintages in the 1996 to 1999 period altogether”, my admired CC said. Well, the lion is not so fierce…at least in this particular case. Calid gold colour for an expressive, little overiped nose(apple pie or lemony meringue). Dense, fat mouthfeel. Lovely acidic aftertaste. Interesting if not an outstanding bottle. Matched with a braised fillet of turbot

Había comprado esta botella con miedo, los casos de botellas oxidadas, ya sabes. Mi admirado CC dijo que “quizás sería de sabios saltarse las añadas del 96 al 99, ambas incluidas”. Bueno, el león no es tan fiero…al menos en este caso. Color oro cálido, para una nariz expresiva, ligeramente sobremadurada (tarta de manzana o merengue alimonado). Densa sensación en boca, grasa. Rico postgusto ácido. Una botella interesante, acaso fuera de lo común. Maridó unos filetes de rodaballo a la plancha.
